Most people book a facial because their skin needs attention. Makes total sense. But when you come to Skin Property Esthetics and get treated by me (Emily Trampetti, LE), something else happens too. You get on the table, sink into the mat underneath you, and most people are halfway to sleep before the first ten minutes.
That's the PEMF mat working.
I added the Holistix Paragon PEMF mat to my treatment room because I believe your skin cannot fully thrive in a body that's inflamed, exhausted, and running on stress hormones. I've believed this since I started in this work. Your skin is your largest organ. It tells you everything about what's going on inside. A good serum won't fix a stressed nervous system. A great facial won't undo months of poor sleep. If we want lasting skin health, we have to look at the whole picture.
The PEMF mat is how I deliver on that in every single treatment.
PEMF stands for Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy. The FDA cleared it for clinical use way back in 1979, starting with bone healing. Since then it's been studied and used in orthopedics, physical therapy, wound care, and sports medicine. Bringing it into skincare and wellness is newer, and that's exactly where I think it belongs.
Here's how it works without the jargon.
Every cell in your body runs on electrical energy. Your cells use that energy to repair themselves, produce collagen, regulate inflammation, and communicate with surrounding tissue. Stress, age, poor sleep, and chronic inflammation all drain that cellular charge over time. Things slow down. You feel it in your body as tension, fatigue, and soreness. You see it on your face as dullness, inflammation, and skin that just isn't responding the way it used to.
PEMF sends low-frequency electromagnetic pulses through your body to safely support that cellular recharge. It helps your body do what it already knows how to do, just with more resources to work with. Better circulation, more efficient repair, a calmer nervous system.
The Holistix Paragon mat I use layers PEMF with far infrared heat, photon light, and seven genuine embedded gemstones: amethyst, sodalite, blue lace agate, green aventurine, yellow aventurine, carnelian, and red jasper. It has nine adjustable frequency levels from 1 to 30 Hz. Lower frequencies are more calming. Higher ones are more activating at the cellular level. I set it based on what each client walks in needing that day.
The body benefits are where the clinical research is most robust. I want to walk through these because I think they're worth knowing, especially for my clients who come in dealing with more than just skin concerns.
Bone density
This is where PEMF has its strongest human clinical evidence. A study published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research found that women exposed to PEMF had significantly increased bone mineral density during the treatment period. A more recent randomized placebo-controlled trial used a full-body PEMF mat three times a week for 12 weeks and found significant increases in hip and lumbar spine bone density, with those gains lasting up to six months after treatment ended. For women navigating perimenopause and beyond, this is a big deal. Bone loss happens quietly for years before it becomes a problem. Supporting it proactively matters.
Sleep
A double-blind placebo-controlled study on magnetic field therapy found that 70% of people in the active treatment group had substantial or complete relief from their sleep problems. Sleep onset, nighttime interruptions, daytime fatigue, and concentration were all significantly improved in the treatment group compared to placebo. A larger 2023 clinical trial found that nearly 70% of the PEMF group no longer had clinically significant insomnia by the end of the study, versus about 35% in the sham group. The thinking is that lower PEMF frequencies help guide the brain from the high-alert state most of us live in toward the slower brainwave patterns that make deep, restorative sleep possible.
Sleep and skin health are inseparable. Collagen is repaired during sleep. Cortisol drops during sleep. Barrier function is restored during sleep. If someone's skin isn't responding to treatment, I definitely ask about sleep as part of my consultation.
Inflammation and muscle recovery
A peer-reviewed review published on PubMed compiled data from multiple studies using both animal and human tissue and found that PEMF consistently modulated inflammatory processes, reducing pro-inflammatory signals and supporting the body's natural recovery pathway. This is relevant for anyone dealing with chronic inflammation, joint discomfort, or muscles that don't recover quickly after activity. Your body spends a lot of energy managing low-grade inflammation. When that burden is lower, there's more bandwidth for repair.
Nervous system regulation
A 2025 double-blind trial with 485 participants found significant improvements in sleep quality and anxiety following PEMF therapy, particularly at 16 Hz. When your nervous system is stuck in a stress response, almost every system in your body pays a price. Digestion, hormones, skin barrier function, immune response. Getting out of that state for even 60 to 90 minutes, consistently, matters more than most people realize.
Skin aging comes down to two main things: inflammation and cellular slowdown. Chronic inflammation, free radicals and UV damage breaks down collagen and elastin, keeps the skin reactive, and disrupts barrier function. Cellular slowdown means your skin's repair cycles are sluggish, circulation is poor, and the products you use can't work as well because your skin isn't absorbing or responding the way it should.
PEMF works on both of those things from the inside.
On inflammation: a 2015 lab study by Kubat et al. used actual human skin cells, specifically human dermal fibroblasts and human epidermal keratinocytes, and found that PEMF shifted gene expression in those cells toward inflammation resolution. This is human cell data, not animal data. It was a lab study, not a clinical skincare trial, so I want to be precise about that. But the mechanism is real and it's happening in human skin cell types.
On collagen: the most cited research here comes from animal studies. A 2006 study published in Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry found measurably increased collagen synthesis in rat skin at specific PEMF frequencies. We do not yet have large-scale human clinical trials on PEMF for skin aging specifically, but we'll most likely have more in the future.
What we do have is solid human cell research on inflammation, solid human clinical trials on bone density and sleep, and a clear biological logic connecting all of those things to skin health. A body with lower inflammation, better sleep, and more efficient cellular function is going to show that in its skin. That much I'm confident in.
Every new client appointment starts with a consultation. Not a quick check-in. A real one. We talk through health and skin history, I look at your skin under magnification, ask about your health, sleep, stress, routine, and what you're hoping to change. We build the treatment around what you actually need, not a preset menu.
The PEMF mat runs the entire session. You lie down on it and it gets to work while I focus on your face. Most clients feel the gentle warmth from the infrared layer within the first few minutes. By the midpoint, most are deeply relaxed. A lot of them fall asleep and have one of their best night's sleep following.
When they sit up afterward, they notice it immediately. Their skin looks calmer and brighter, yes. But they also feel different in their body. Less tight. More grounded. Clearer. That's not a coincidence and it's not just the facial. It's what happens when your whole system gets to take a breath for an hour.
That's what I wanted to build with Skin Property. Not a place you go to get a treatment done to you. A place where your skin and your body both get real support, at the same time, in the same room.
PEMF is not a cure-all. I don't use it because it's trendy. I use it because the science behind the core mechanisms is solid and the safety profile is excellent.
The human clinical research is strongest for bone health, sleep, and inflammation. The skin-specific evidence is promising but still developing, and most of the collagen data comes from animal models rather than human clinical trials.
What I observe in my studio is consistent with what the research suggests. That combination of credible biology and real-world observation is enough for me to stand behind this tool fully.
If your skin has been stuck and you've been doing all the right things, something deeper might be going on. Come in and let's figure it out together.
